Jack Johnson

Move like a jellyfish, rhythm is nothing you go with the flow you don’t stop. — Jack Johnson

If you know me, you know I love Jack Johnson. There is something about his songs that I, and many others, find so appealing . Perhaps the it’s the simplicity of his chord progressions (the “sound” of the song) and lyrics. Either way, this Hawaii-born and raised singer has made quite a name for himself since his debut album, Brushfire Fairytales, released in 2001. His mellow sound and folksy style has turned him into one of most recognized musicians in the soft rock genre (biography.com).

Growing up in Hawaii, surfing was an everyday way of life for Johnson. At the age of 5, he was taught by his father, Jeff Johnson, how to shred some waves. He became so passionate about the sport that he started surfing professionally in his teenage years. At the same time, Jack Johnson also discovered an interest in music and playing guitar. After a horrible surfing accident at the Pipeline Masters, he decided to carry on his passion for music and leave surfing behind. Following his graduation from UC Santa Barbara, he was finally discovered as an artist.

Ben Harper, another popular musician in the soft rock genre (and one of my favorites!), took Johnson on as his protégé in 2001. Harper’s tour acted as the starting point of Jack Johnson’s career, leading him to sign with Universal Music Group Publishing (UMGP). Once he signed with UMBP, Johnson never looked back. After his first album went platinum, he released On and On in 2002. This album, and all albums after, turned out to be very successful.

Not only is Jack Johnson a talented musician, but he is also an involved environmental advocate. His most recent album (shown above) addresses the problems of plastic pollution in the ocean.

Now that you know all about Jack Johnson, you can see why I like him so much. He’s a singer, a surfer, and all-around great guy. If you ever want to escape the stress of everyday life, I would definitely recommend listening to Jack Johnson’s soothing sound.
