During winter break, I was thrilled to receive a record player for Christmas! It was something that I always wanted and now that it’s in my possession, I’ve started to look for my favorite albums on vinyl. I have a bit of an obsession with 70’s music so this has not been a difficult task to accomplish. At the beginning of my search, one of the first albums that I came across was For Everyman by Jackson Browne. This is one of Browne’s earliest and best albums (in my opinion). Although I’ve listened to Jackson Browne’s music for most of my life, I never realized how much I didn’t know about him.
Jackson Browne is a 1970’s rock sensation who started writing music when he was just 16 years old. He started his career as a song-writer in New York at Elektra Records publishing company. Amazingly, Browne was only 17 at the time, and played with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band as well. Shortly after his time at Elektra, Browne started to back the famous singer, Nico, and other well-known bands.
In 1971, Jackson Browne’s outstanding resume and appealing mellow tone led him to sign with Asylum Records. He released his first album, Jackson Browne, just a year later. In the prime of his career, Browne recorded top hits like “Doctor My Eyes” and “Running on Empty.” He also worked with some great artists, such as Joni Mitchell, The Eagles, and Warren Zevon.
Jackson Browne continues to write music to this day, using his platform to his advantage. He is an environmental activist, and a member of the Musicians United for Safe Energy (MUSE). His personal and insightful writing allows him to project his voice about the environmental matters of the 21st century. His song “Lives in the Balance” explicitly protests the U.S. government’s actions. Clearly, Jackson Browne has earned his spot as one of the top artists of this generation. He is an accomplished and thoughtful musician who takes action for what he believes in.
